How Siding Painting & Installation Works
Every siding job starts with finding out how much of it is carpentry.
Walk every elevation
We check each wall for soft spots, open joints, failed caulk and mildew, tapping suspect boards to find what is still solid and what has gone spongy behind the paint.
Separate the scopes
Your estimate splits the repair and installation list from the coating list, so you can see how much of the number is carpentry and how much is finish work.
Wash and dry down
The house is washed to strip mildew, pollen and chalk, then left to dry. Coating a damp wall traps moisture behind the film, and it blisters out within a season.
Replace and install
Failed boards come out, new material goes on over house wrap and flashing, and corners and trim are set so water runs back out of the wall instead of into it.
Caulk and prime
Joints, corners and penetrations get a caulk that stays flexible. Bare wood and new board get primer, because fresh material pulls a finish coat in unevenly without it.
Coat and walk it
Two full coats go on, working elevation by elevation and staying out of direct afternoon sun. We walk the house with you in daylight and correct whatever you flag.
Materials we use
What goes on the wall depends on what the wall is. Fiber cement holds a coating well and takes a 100 percent acrylic topcoat. Hardboard and Masonite are wood pulp, so they swell from the bottom edge up, and every cut end needs priming before the board is installed. Vinyl expands and contracts all day, so it needs a coating rated for it and a colour no darker than the original.
On installation we work from the wall outward. House wrap goes on as a drainage plane, flashing goes over windows, doors and horizontal joints, and fasteners are set to hold a board without crushing it. Joints land on framing rather than in open air. Butt joints, corners and penetrations are then sealed with a flexible exterior caulk, because that seal is what keeps water out once the paint is only paint.
Coatings are chosen per substrate. Bare and newly installed wood or hardboard gets a stain-blocking primer so tannin cannot bleed yellow through the finish. Brick and stucco get a masonry primer that tolerates alkalinity. The body takes a 100 percent acrylic exterior latex in a flat or low-sheen finish, which sheds water and plays down the long lap lines that a gloss would exaggerate.
