How Color Consultation Works
The order matters, because color read out of context is the reason most repaints get repainted.
Walkthrough and intake
We walk the rooms or the elevations, note the fixed finishes you are not changing, and ask what you want the space to feel like. That narrows hundreds of options to a handful.
Fixed elements first
Roof shingle, brick, stone, mortar, flooring and countertops are staying. We read their undertones first and build outward, because the coating has to agree with them, not the reverse.
Boards, not chips
We paint large sample boards in the candidate colors. A two-inch chip sits on white paper and lies about undertone. A board held against your wall does not.
Light checks
You view the boards on north-facing and south-facing walls, in daylight and under your own bulbs. A greige that reads warm at noon can turn violet in north light.
Whole-home flow
We check how each color meets the next through open doorways and stair runs. Rooms that see each other need related undertones, or the transitions look like mistakes.
Written palette and sheens
You get the final color names and locations, plus the sheen for walls, ceilings, trim and doors. That sheet becomes the scope for the estimate and for touch-ups later.
Materials we use
Sample boards are the main tool. We coat rigid board stock with two full coats of the actual candidate colors, in the sheen you will end up with, because sheen changes perceived depth as much as pigment does. A drawdown or board can be moved wall to wall, held next to your trim, propped on the floor beside the sofa, and carried outside to check against brick. Chips cannot do any of that.
For interiors we plan around water-based wall paints in flat, matte and eggshell, with water-based enamel for trim and doors. On exteriors the palette has to work in a 100 percent acrylic latex, which holds color in UV better than cheaper resins and stays flexible through Charlotte's freeze-and-thaw nights. Where bare wood, tannin-rich cedar or patched masonry is involved, we note the primer the color will need so the finish reads true instead of muddy.
Sheen is chosen surface by surface. Ceilings get flat so joints and roller stipple disappear. Living and bedroom walls usually take matte or eggshell, which cleans up better than flat without spotlighting drywall waves. Baths, kitchens and mudrooms want satin for moisture and scrubbing. Trim, doors and railings get semi-gloss or a satin enamel for hand traffic. Two full coats are planned for every color change, since one coat lets the old color telegraph through.
